First and foremost, I give all credit to God for the ability I have to
work with my hands in crafting knives.
My fascination with knives began at a young age when I learned that my
grandfather was a blacksmith and had made some knives. I have been
collecting knives most of my life. My collection includes the first knife my
father owned, which was his father's knife. I also have the last knife that
my father owned.
I am an avid hunter, and in my quest to find the perfect hunting knife,
the expense drove me to try my hand at making my own. My job
dealt with metallurgy, so I understood the basic requirements of a good
blade. I made my first knife in 1996. It was made from an old
file and had a deer antler for the handle with no guard. I've come a
long way since then! I've thought about going back and dressing up that
knife, but my son says "It wouldn't be your first knife then."
In 1997, when the empty nest syndrome hit, my passion for knife
making really took off. I spent every spare moment honing my
craft...working in the shop, studying knife making books, and watching knife
making videos.
Now dozens of knives later, I've officially opened Spurlin Knives LLC.
